Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers are fairly common migrants and winter residents. They are rare but apparently increasing breeders in far western Maryland.
Sap wells are important supplements for many wintering bird species and early spring migrants. Some of the earliest arriving hummingbirds, especially in the north, arrive too early for blooming wildflowers. They instead time their arrival with a healthy supply of energy-rich sap. Species ranging from insects and other birds to bats and porcupines have been documented at the unguarded syrupy buffet.
There are 907 records in the project database.
