Description:

Fruiting body: Deep cup with distinct stalk. Fertile (interior)surface: Smooth, black. Infertile (exterior) surface: Black / brown, densely matted / woolly; margin appears torn. Stalk: Similar to rest of fruiting body, tapers down.

Relationships:

Found on decaying hardwood or buried wood, often on mosses. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
