Macroderma curtisii is a microscopic, pathogenic fungus. Observations without microscopic or molecular confirmation are speculative.
Tar Spot of Holly starts as a yellow spot on the leaf in the fall and becomes a dark black bubble (stromata) late in the year. In the spring of the following year the bubble bursts exposing the orangish apothecia within (where the spores are produced)(Luttrell 1940, Bull. Torrey Bot. Club.).
