The Turkey Point Bird Count Starts This Sunday, 8/1!
Can you believe it? The Turkey Point Bird Count starts this Sunday, 8/1! Maryland Biodiversity Project is delighted to welcome Maryland’s own Daniel Irons as our official counter from August 1st through November 15th. We are going to learn a tremendous amount about eastern U.S. bird migration from this first-ever morning flight count in the area.
How’s this for a preview of the surprises we have in store? Daniel visited Turkey Point to get the lay of the land and found Maryland’s earliest-ever fall migrant TENNESSEE WARBLER and only the second July record we know of for the state. Awesome!

The MBP page already links to eBird, but we’ll also present live update data from Trektellen and will be adding more about our counter, Daniel. Donations and additional sponsorship would be greatly appreciated.
Here’s a photo of a Tennessee Warbler (TEWA) being banded at Foreman’s Branch Bird Observatory at Washington College two calendar months later, when civilized folks expect TEWA migrating through Maryland. Photo courtesy of Jonathan Irons, Queen Anne’s Co., Maryland (9/9/2020).
