Description

Gymnodinium fuscum is a relatively large, freshwater dinoflagellate. It is 'naked' and lacks cellulose plates (called a theca). Gymnodinium fuscum can be identified by its large size, rounded apex (epicone) and roughly triangular shaped hypocone.

Where To Find

Gymnodinium fuscum can be found throughout Maryland in freshwater habitats. It may be found in the plankton but is more often encountered among plants and algae in shallow water.
