Red Columbine Aquilegia canadensis Linnaeus var. canadensis    Synonyms: Wild Columbine.
Kingdom Plantae   >   Division Tracheophyta   >   Class Magnoliopsida   >   Order Ranunculales   >   Family Ranunculaceae   >   Genus Aquilegia

Status:

Red Columbine is native to the eastern and central United States and some Canadian provinces.

Description:

Flowers are large and showy, with five reddish to yellow sepals, and five, concave petals, which are produced backward between the sepals as large, hollow spurs, much longer than the sepals. The petals are red on the outside and yellow inside. The stamens and styles (male and female flower parts, respectively) are visible because they poke out of the flower. The leaves are two- or three-times compound, with rounded leaflets. (J. Hill/MNPS)

Where to find:

Look for Red Columbine in rocky woods or open areas. It's frequent in the mountains and middle part of Maryland, rare in coastal areas. (J. Hill/MNPS)

Relationships:

Bumble bees and Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds visit the flowers for nectar. The foliage is toxic, so it is little bothered by mammalian herbivores such as deer.

There are 308 records in the project database.
