Description

Pleurotaenium ehrenbergii is a microscopic, unicellular green alga. It is characterized by its elongate, cylindrical cells with a supra-median inflation and a crown of teeth at each apex.

Where To Find

This species is relatively common in freshwater habitats throughout Maryland. It is tolerant of a wide variety of chemical conditions but is most abundant in lakes and wetlands with moderate to low conductivity. You will find it on sediments or among plants in slow-moving water. It will also occasionally be found in the plankton. Pleurotaenium ehrenbergii can be found throughout the year.
