Meadow Fritillary Boloria bellona (Fabricius, 1775)

Status:

The Meadow Fritillary (Boloria bellona) is uncommonly distributed across most of Maryland, except for the southernmost Western Shore, and most of the Eastern Shore of the Coastal Plain. As suggested by its common name, this butterfly prefers open, grassy fields and wet meadows, where its host plants can be found. Meadow Fritillary flies in April, June, and early September (multi-voltine) in Maryland (Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith).

Relationships:

Larvae feed on violets (Viola sp.) as larval food plants. Recorded using Common Blue Violet (Viola sororia) (Allen, 1997).

There are 77 records in the project database.
