American Snout Libytheana carinenta (Cramer, 1777)  

Status:

The unusual and endearing American Snout (Libytheana carinenta), named for the prominently projecting palpi on its face, is closely associated with hackberry. This small butterfly is found in open woods throughout Maryland, though it may be uncommon or sporadic in occurrence (Butterflies of Maryland: A Biological Summary and Checklist by Lynn Davidson & Richard Smith). May frequently be found nectaring at flowers, or visiting wet mud or sap runs (Brock & Kaufman, 2003).

Relationships:

Utilizes Celtis species for larval host plants.
