Bluehead Chub Nocomis leptocephalus (Girard, 1856)

Status:

This southeastern U.S. species was recently documented in Maryland and is considered non-native. It may be becoming widespread in Potomac River tributaries in Montgomery and Frederick Counties. (R. Aguilar and J. Cessna, pers. comm.)

Description:

The distinctive pattern in breeding male tubercles easily differentiates Bluehead Chub (large, on dorsum only) from the native River Chub (medium to large, from snout tip to internasal area). Also, the gut is whorled in Bluehead Chub, but unwhorled in River Chub. (R. Aguilar, pers. comm.).
