Galls on Wingstem caused by the gall midge Neolasioptera incisa in Howard Co., Maryland (9/4/2013). Richard Orr states, "There are two species of Gall Midges (Cecidomyiidae) that create galls on Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia). Both Gall Midges are in the genus Neolasioptera. Neolasioptera verbesinae form galls on the main stem of the plant. Neolasioptera incisa (shown in photo) forms galls at the base of the branches. Both species can and do occur on the same plant."
