The identity of Pulex specimens collected prior to 1958 is questionable. Smit (1958) described differences in the males of Pulex irritans Linnaeus, 1758, and Pulex simulans Baker, 1895, and resurrected the latter species from synonomy. There have been few collections of Pulex fleas in Maryland since 1931. (Eckerlin, 2011)
