Vaucheria sp. forms macroscopic, dark green mats with a rough texture. Individual filaments are wide enough to be observable with the unaided eye. Although it is usually dark green in color, it is a xanthophyte (Xanthophyceae, Ochrophyta). Microscopic examination is necessary to confirm identification. It can be distinguished from similar-looking species by its large diameter and lack of cross-walls. Each filament is a single, undivided, infrequently-branched cell. Reproductive structures are necessary for species identification.
Vaucheria spp. are common in freshwater and brackish, tidal and non-tidal wetlands and streams of Maryland's Coastal Plain. Look for dark green mats on muddy or sandy sediments.
