Holopogon guttulus is a small, dark robber fly with a habit of perching on the ends of twigs and stems in a similar fashion to a Cerotainia, which shows much longer antennae. Several similar species were split from H. guttulus by Martin's revision in 1959, and older references to H. guttulus may refer to one of those. H. guttulus as presently defined does not range into New England (Herschel Raney's RNA site).
