Nicocles pictus (Loew, 1866)
Kingdom Animalia   >   Phylum Arthropoda   >   Class Insecta   >   Order Diptera   >   Family Asilidae   >   Genus Nicocles

Status:

According to Paul Bedell (BugGuide comment here), Nicocles pictus appears to favor roadsides through pine/oak woods. The flies evidently prefer to perch low on terminal buds. This species has interesting display behaviors, with males undulating the abdomen to flash pale markings. They are quite cold tolerant, and are active as adults in late fall, and again in early spring (Bedell, 2010).
