This species is more often reported as Pediastrum araneosum in North America, which is considered a synonym of Pediastrum angulosum
Pediastrum angulosum forms a colony of regular shape (called a coenobium). The colonies are flat with irregularly shaped integral cells and bilobed marginal cells. The cell surface has a large reticulated pattern of ornamentation.
Pediastrum species can be found in the plankton or metaphyton of most freshwater and some brackish water habitats. They may become dominant plankton in eutrophic (i.e., nutrient-rich) waters.
