The use of light microscopy is necessary to identify this species. Tubifera microsperma is most similar to Tubifera pseudomicrosperma, which has not been reported from Maryland.
Fruiting bodies (sporothecae) are creamy white to pale pink, maturing brown. The peridium has rimmed craters on the internal surface visible by light microscopy.
