Fruiting body: Cup/disc-shaped; margin smooth to finely scalloped, somewhat inrolled; brittle. Fertile surface: Violet to wine-colored (may be barely tinted). Infertile surface: Whitish/ochraceous; slightly granular. Stalk: None. Slightly off-center attachment to soil, pucker visible on fertile surface. Spores of the two species differ only in degree of roughness of exterior (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
Solitary or clustered on bare soil in forests.
