Found solitary or, more often, in groups, usually under conifers, occasionally hardwoods.
Cap: Initially flat becoming centrally depressed, vase-shaped in age; gray / brown; fragrant. Gills: White to cream, decurrent, close to distant. Stalk: May be straight, but most often with bulbous base covered with white mycelium, usually tapers up. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
