Status:

Found in small groups or extensive masses on well-rotted hardwood logs, mostly during cooler portions of the year.

Description:

Fruiting body: Tiny (.5 – 3 mm); translucent, waxy, smooth, shallow cups mostly in shades of white, yellow, and orange. No stalks.

These jewel-like fungi are best appreciated through a hand lens. The family consists of 12 genera separable only by multiple microscopic characteristics. According to Ascomycete Fungi of North America, p. 434, the species most likely to be noted by amateurs are in the two macroscopic gemera Hyalorbilia and Orbilia. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
