The native range of Broadleaf Helleborine includes Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. This orchid has been introduced to North America and has widely naturalized, mostly in the northeastern United States, eastern Canada, and the Great Lakes Region, and also in scattered locations across the continent. Some U.S. states, including Maryland, have labeled the plant an invasive. It was not abundant in Maryland, however, as of 2023, though its abundance may be increasing. Broadleaf Helleborine is most common in the state’s mountainous counties. A 2012 record from Kent County was the only record from the Eastern Shore as of June 2023.
Leaves are ovate to lanceolate, have prominent veins, and clasp the stem. Flowers are greenish-yellow tinged with purple.
This orchid is often found in disturbed, anthropogenic areas, such as gardens, parks, and roadsides. It also occurs in forests and swamps.
There are 64 records in the project database.
