Found scattered or in groups on ground in mixed conifer or deciduous forests.
Cap: Large, pinkish-orange, conical covered with warts of same color; convex becoming flat in age; margin may have veil remnants; flesh thick, white with strange unpleasant odor (compared in some references to "old ham"). Gills: White/cream, crowded, may have areas with red tinges; patterned veil may still cover gills when fruiting body is sizeable. Stalk: White/pale pinkish-orange; white membranous ring; a substantial portion of the large spindle-shaped bulb (often with longitudinal splits) may be visible above ground (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
