Hophornbeam grows in moist forests and on rocky slopes, often with oaks. In Maryland, it occurs in the mountains and Piedmont (J. Hill/MNPS).
Host plant for various moth species including Olethreutes merrickanum, Olethreutes fagigemmeana, Walnut Sphinx Moth and Banded Tussock Moth (Database of World's Lepidopteran Host Plants, Gilligan, Wright, & Gibson, 2008).
