Found solitary or in groups on the ground in hardwood forests, primarily oak.
Cap color variable, hemispheric, dry, smooth to pitted, cracked in age; flesh white. Pores: white (yellow to brown in age). Stalk: white or colored like cap; rough surface with whitish to brown scabers in lines (in age) (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
