Solitary or clustered on decaying conifers, occasionally on oak, also on fence posts, railroad ties, and so on.
Cap: White with coarse brown scales, convex to nearly flat, margin strongly inrolled; flesh firm, white, sometimes sweet- smelling. Gills: White/yellowish; edges serrate; slightly decurrent. Stalk: Whitish with scales, may be red-brown at base (J. Solem, pers. comm.).
