Status

Ommatius is the only genus of Nearctic Asilidae with a plumose style to the antenna. This species, O. gemma, has a pair of diagnostic upright marginal bristles on the scutellum, lacking in similar species. This detail requires a very close macro photo, or preferably, in-hand examination (Herschel Raney's RNA site).
