Found in dense clusters on well-decayed wood or bark.

Description

Fruiting body: Up to 1/8" tall (3 mmj); dark red to black sporangia in clusters from a common stalk; at maturity red mass of threads exposed. Stalk: Short, dark. (J. Solem, pers. comm.)
