Status

Several species of Pocket Moss have been reported from Maryland. Fissidens taxifolius may be the most widely-reported species, perhaps because it is relatively large and can be found in a variety of habitats.

Description

As is the case for most mosses, you will need a microscope to identify species of Pocket Moss. In general, you need to observe the microscopic structure of the leaves to distinguish species. You can find a key to species in the Flora of North America series.

Where To Find

Pocket Mosses can be found throughout Maryland in damp habitats, often attached to hard substrates but sometimes growing on soil.
