The Sea Walnut (Mnemiopsis leidyi) is a comb jelly, a distinct order of living things at the same taxonomic level as jellyfish. They are found year-round in the lower and middle Chesapeake Bay, but are most common in spring and fall. They tend to be found near the surface of the water, and are more common than Sea Nettles and our other true jellyfish.
They feed on microorganisms by constantly pumping water through their bodies. The closely related Pink Comb Jelly is a major predator of this species.
