Description:

Gymnodinium fuscum is a relatively large, freshwater dinoflagellate. It is 'naked' and lacks cellulose plates (called a theca). Gymnodinium fuscum can be identified by its large size, rounded apex (epicone) and roughly triangular shaped hypocone.

Where to find:

Gymnodinium fuscum can be found throughout Maryland in freshwater habitats. It may be found in the plankton but is more often encountered among plants and algae in shallow water.
