This is a microscopic fungus. Observations without microscopic details are speculative.

Description:

This microscopic fungus causes black tar spots on many species, especially species of Maple (Acer spp.). Observation of microscopic features is necessary to distinguish this species from other fungi causing tar spots on maples (e.g., Rhytisma americana).
