Status:

Common throughout most of Maryland, but less so on the Coastal Plain.

"[In] much of the greater Washington, D.C. area along the fall line and inner coastal plain, dry, weathered, acidic summits, hilltops, terrace tops, and upper slopes of hills and ridges are usually characterized by dominant stands of Chestnut Oak and Mountain Laurel...occasionally intermingled with lesser concentrations of deciduous heaths and other heaths. Often co-dominant and intermixed with the above on mid to lower north facing slopes--especially on very steep slopes and above streams--are Witch Hazel...and Northern Red Oak" (Botanist/ecologist R. Simmons, as quoted in Choukas-Bradley, 2012).

Relationships:

Host plant for various moth species including Speckled Sereda Moth, Gymnandrosoma punctidiscanum, Common Gray Moth, Banded Tussock Moth, American Dagger Moth and Buck Moth (Database of the World's Lepidopteran Hostplants).
