In Maryland, the common name of this plant, "Piedmont Staggerbush," is misleading because the plant occurs mainly on the Coastal Plain. In fact, Brown and Brown, in their 1972 book Woody Plants of Maryland, state that it is "[c]ommon on the Coastal Plain, rare or absent elsewhere," and they call it "Stagger bush" rather than "Piedmont Staggerbush." They describe its habitat as "swamps, moist or dry forests, especially on sandy soils."
Host plant for various moth species including Major Datana Moth (Miller et al., 2018).
