A local and uncommon wintering species in Maryland. Most consistently found in western Maryland and increasing rare as one moves east onto the coastal plain. Rare in southern Maryland and on the lower Eastern Shore. Snow often increases detectability and sightings at bird feeders. American Tree Sparrows are generally uncommon winter residents in Maryland - most common in western Maryland and far less common to rare on the coastal plain. Like many sparrows, they can suddenly seem much more common when it snows and they concentrate at roadsides and feeders. They breed across the tundra in Canada and Alaska and are purely winter residents across the Lower 48.
